Why they are coming out across the state
Bradford pear was sold as a sterile ornamental for decades. It is not sterile. Different Callery pear cultivars planted near each other cross pollinate, produce fertile fruit, and birds spread the seed into every edge habitat in the Piedmont. The wild offspring revert to thorny thickets that outcompete natives.
The NC Invasive Plant Council lists Callery pear as a Rank 1 severe threat. NC State Extension runs a Bradford pear bounty program in several counties, where homeowners can trade a cut pear for a free native replacement. The Cabarrus, Rowan, and Mecklenburg extension offices have all participated in recent years.
Structurally the tree is also a liability. Bradford pear has famously weak branch unions, and a mature specimen splits in half in most Piedmont ice storms and summer thunderstorms. Insurance carriers have started to flag them.
What makes the stump unusual to grind
A same-caliper oak or maple has a comparatively narrow root flare. Callery pear does the opposite. The root plate spreads wide and shallow, with heavy buttress swellings at the base of the trunk. Three things follow from that:
- Effective grind diameter is bigger than it looks. A pear that measures 14 inches at chest height often measures 20 to 22 inches at grade. Time on the wheel scales with that grade diameter, not the trunk. See how to measure a stump before requesting a quote for how we quote it.
- The chip pile is larger. Wider grade diameter plus surface roots means more wood chip than the tree's canopy would suggest. Plan for the volume in the chip handling guide.
- Surface roots are aggressive. Pear puts out lateral roots that run just under the sod for six to ten feet in every direction. If any of those get exposed they will sprout. On removals where we know a lawn is going back in, we grind those laterals down as far as the wheel will reach.
Suckering: the reason grinding matters more here
Callery pear resprouts more aggressively than nearly any other yard tree in the Piedmont. Cut a pear at ground level and leave the stump, and within one growing season you will have a ring of shoots on the stump plus another ring of shoots from the root suckers up to ten feet away. Mow them and they come back thicker.
The only reliable stop is a full grind to at least twelve inches below grade, taking the visible surface roots with it. Any exposed root you leave in place is a candidate to sucker. This is why we quote pear removals at a deeper default depth than the eight inch turf grind we use for hardwoods.
What to plant in its place
NC State Extension's replacement list favors native alternatives that fill the same spring bloom niche without the invasive risk:
- Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea). White spring bloom, edible berries, red fall color. Native to the Piedmont.
- Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis). Pink spring bloom, fast establishment, small footprint.
- Fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus). White fringed spring bloom, small tree suited to yards under power lines.
- Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida). The classic Piedmont ornamental. Native and it feeds birds in fall.
- American plum (Prunus americana). White spring bloom, edible fruit, hedgerow scale.
All five root deeply and none of them are stump sprouters, so if you ever have to remove one in twenty years the grind is a straightforward hardwood job.
