Stump grinding cost in North Carolina
Real ranges from the same engine we use to write firm quotes. No sales pitch, no upsell, no phone-only pricing.
What most stumps actually cost
Ranges assume chips stay on site, access is open, and the standard 8 in grind depth. Deeper tiers add to the base rate: 12 in replant depth adds 25 percent, 18 in hardscape depth adds 50 percent. Extras like haul-off, backfill, seeding, or tight access shift the number too, and the calculator below prices those in. Below a 200 dollar minimum the trip is not worth the setup.
What actually drives cost
The base rate. Measured at ground level across the widest point and the perpendicular, then averaged. Root flare counts.
A tall stump multiplies the number of passes the wheel makes. Six inches and under is included. Seven to 12 adds 25 percent. Thirteen to 24 adds 50.
A stump with heavy flare has more wood below grade than a stump the same size on top. That extra surface adds time and depth.
A 48 inch gate lets our full-size grinder in. A 36 inch gate limits us to a compact machine, which is slower per inch. Anything tighter needs a site review.
Level yards inside 150 feet of the truck are included. Soft ground, slopes, and long pulls up a driveway or into a back lot add setup time.
Leaving chips is free. Spreading is small. Hauling and backfill are quoted from the total inches removed.
Price it yourself
Slide to your stump size, height, and count. Pick a chip plan. The number you see is the same range we would send you in writing. If access is tight or the site needs a review, the calculator will tell you.

What each option actually costs
Chips managed. Yard walked. Ready for grass or garden in a week. Almost always the right call for a residential yard.
Roots come out. Crater has to be backfilled and compacted. Only worth it when the roots themselves are in the way of a footing, a pool, or a large replant.
The stump sprouts, invites termites and carpenter ants, and heaves the soil around it. Costs more later when it has to come out anyway.
Why the cheapest quote usually costs more
Grind depth is the number that decides whether a stump job is finished or halfway done. A four inch flush grind takes roughly a third of the wheel work of an eight inch below-grade grind. That is why the flush quote can come in 40 percent cheaper on paper.
Two months later the crown regrows, the surface heaves, and you pay the second contractor to grind it properly. You have now spent 140 percent of the original real number.
Ask any contractor to put grind depth in inches, in writing, on the quote. If they will not, keep shopping. Ours reads: Grind to 8 in below grade unless otherwise noted. That single line is what a real quote looks like.

(704) 780-2891Most residential stumps in North Carolina land between 200 and 600 dollars. A yard tree in the 24 to 30 inch range typically grinds for 275 to 425 dollars if chips stay on site. Below the 200 dollar minimum, the trip is not worth the setup.
Per stump, priced from the effective diameter. Effective diameter is the average of the widest measurement and the perpendicular measurement at ground level including root flare, not across the cut face.
Because the price only makes sense at a certain grind depth. A four inch flush grind is roughly a third of the wheel work of an eight inch grind, so the quote can look 40 percent cheaper. Then the crown regrows, the spot heaves, and you pay again for a real grind. Always compare grind depth in writing, not headline price.
Leaving chips on site is included. Spreading them nearby is a small add. Hauling them off is priced by the total inches of stump. Backfill with topsoil is priced together with haul-off.
Yes. The setup and travel cost is fixed, so the second and third stumps at the same address are cheaper per stump than the first. Multi-stump jobs also unlock route pricing when we can schedule them into an existing day.
The effective diameter for each stump, the grind depth in inches, the chip plan, any add-ons like backfill or seeding, the total price, and how long the number is valid. If a quote does not name the depth, ask before you sign.
